Thanks for your terrifically complete site. My husband was flying
to Taiwan on business and saw an article in the Asian Wall Street
Journal about the deaths from EV 71 and called home obviously
very anxious about what he might be exposed to there, and th n
bring home to our young children. It was hard to get any info
over the phone; while helpful, specialists at local univs didn't
know about this particular outbreak, so everything I hoped to
find out was in your one site. Much appreciated-

Russia has graciously offered Indonesia brave and skilled
pilots and crews together with the world's largest firefighting
aircraft(2-free of charge) through the UN's Dept of Humanitarian
Affairs; these Ilyushin-76s deliver 43K litres/7 second drop
coverin 1.1km x 80m. We expect Indonesia will accept this offer
and welcome Russia's assistance in SE Asia's hour of need. A high
degree of professionalism and teamwork with Indonesian military
would make this an uniquely successful precedent-setting mission.
The aircraft may be viewed at the referenced website. Russia has
also sent three (3) experts and has offered masks.

Thank you for compiling such an excellent directory of
information on the spread and impact of the fires. As many have
said before, you have surpassed the best that the official
agencies have been able to come up with. Something which
particularly worries me is the level of inaction of the
Indonesian authorities. I have visited Jakarta several times over
the last few weeks. On my last visit (October 8-10) I was able to
see 2 or 3 open fires both on landing and take of from the
international airport. If the authorities can't enforce an open
fires ban where it is in full view to the world, there would
appear to be little hope of them doing so in the more remote
locations. Somehow, pressure needs to be brought to bear n the
authorities in Indonesia.

Congrats on creating a one-stop centre for information on the
haze situation. It has been an invaluable source of information
for a Malaysian so far away from home! Have been busy sending
your address to "environment" people the world over.
The Ramsar Con ention recently issued a statement on the forest
fires (check out our web site for the full version) which calls
to attention the fact that the type of forest we are talking
about here is peat swamp forest. Peat soils have the dubious
honour of being able to burn undetected underground for months on
end - hence the problem of not being able to put out the fires by
conventional means. Keep 'em coming.

Is lack of money stopping Ilyushin firefighting aircraft from
fighting SE Asia fires? Russia has large forests that burn with
some frequency and an advanced avation industry. Russians have
been fighting fire from the air for many, many years. The Russian
Emergency Ministry's EMERCOM agency offered state-of-the-art
heavy-lift aerial firefig ting capabilities to Indonesia through
established international disaster management channels weeks ago.
Indonesia was informed of this technology at least a month ago. (see
UN DHA http://www.vita.org/disaster/sitrep/0098.html paragraphs 8
and 9) EMERCOM was ready to start the operation on short notice;
within 72 hours of being alerted to the possibility of going to
Indonesia to help ...and all the flight documents and border
crossing certificates were ready on time. The flight itself is a
mere 19 hours. But EMERCOM has been told by the Indonesians that
although Indonesia would like more firefighting capacity,
Indonesia is not about to pay for the Ilyushins. Neither has the
United Nations come up with the money for the Ilyushins. The UN
has used this airc aft on other missions. This is a pity ......perhaps
even scandalous.....In addition to being much, much faster, the
Ilyushins' payload is at least 4 times larger and up to 20 times
larger than any of the aircraft fighting or committed to fight.
No aircraft committed to fight these fires is capable of dropping
the massive quench volumes the Il-76s can put down at one pass (43K
litres........six cricket patches' area); a useful feature for
the peat fires which require large volumes of liquids. The
Ilyushin Joint Venture has launched an immediate appeal with the
UN through the US State Department following this unfortunate
decision. We are concerned that in their zeal to save money, the
UN and Indonesians are overlooking the most powerful firefighting
appliance in the world. Everyone needs to know why the largest
fire problem in the world is not being fought by the world's
largest fi efighting aircraft. Penny-wise and pound-foolish?
Furthermore; CNN today reports potential for the deaths of
thousands in New Guinea. Think of what 10,000 gallons of potable
water in a single delivery could do for those affected. In our
view, not using the Ilyushin on this whole disaster would be a
terrible, perhaps even a tragic, oversight.

Sir/Madame, At the height of the haze situation, the
Malaysian government issued directives to industries emitting
gaseous and organic effluent to temporarily scale down or cease
operations and an appealed was made to the public to help reduce
the increasingly excess ve level of vehicle exhaust gases
emissions through car pooling, opting for the public transport
and by moving around less. This somewhat indicated an awareness
of the excessive emissions from vehicles and industries to be
even more harzadous to the envir nment and health than the wood
smoke from the haze. I cannot however see how we in Malaysia can
effectively bring down the level of the excessive emissions from
vehicles and industries for so long as we continue with the six-day
working week, and for so l ng as we are able to go shopping till
the late hour of 10.00 pm on all the seven days of the week. We
even have factories operating 24 hours non-stop on all seven days
of the week. The consequences of these excesses have been an
increasingly polluted air rom the excessive emissions from
vehicles and industries almost round the clock and on all the
seven days of the week. Long term measures for environmental
management should therefore include the implementation of a five-day
week together with a complete shutdown of the operations of
industries (including construction work) at night, on weekends
and public holidays, and a reduction in the hours for shopping.
These proposals are complementary and must be implemented
together to get the desired effect of seeing less motor vehicle
and industrial pollutants in the evenings and during weekends and
public holidays. Shopping outl ts in Malaysia are opened till 10.00
pm on all the seven days of the week hence we get traffic
congestions till late at night every day. One tended to get this
feeling of an overheated, hectic pace round the clock in Malaysia.
There is a sense of pressure and tension, of being overwhelmed,
of overdoing things and pushing things to beyond limits and
capabilities in the name of development. There is this sense of
helplessness and fear of the irreversible damage done to the
environment; the greenery, land, ai and sea being abused,
battered and bruised almost round the clock. Despite the fear of
the damage being done to the environment there has yet to be some
semblance of a real commitment on the part of the authorities to
implement measures to protect and co serve the environment. Thamk
you.

The travesty that is the completely predictable fire/haze
sitation in SE Asia is a wake-up call..make that *another * wake-up
call ......to the world to get its emergency response act
together. This is the world after Valdez and the fires of Kuwait
is it not? There is and has been leading edge equipment to deal
with mass fire for quite some time but because of civillian
bureaucratic intransigence in some jurisdictions, others suffer
the lag time of slow technology introductions. We need leaders
who will take control of these situations and these bureaucrats.
Environmental matters have become matters of national and
international security. Give the big environmental challenges to
the military alliances to control. Get the UN/NATO/SEATO involved
wherever they need to be.

Excellent site. I've just got back from Batam Island. Spent
all day at the airport while Garuda vacillated over whether to
dare the haze or not. Finally they cancelled all flights for the
day at five in the evening. Had to go to Singapore by ferry and
squeezed onto the last SQ flight of the day. Home after midnight.
I know everyone is, quite rightly, principally concerned about
the health effects, but think also of the economic consequences.
The haze is the finest example yet of short term gain for ong
term loss. Is your company concerned about the amount of time you
must have spent to put together this high quality site? (Joke)

Very nice site. I was especially impressed with the midi
piano composition. Where did you get it? What software and who
was the author? I visited Kuala Lampur in 1990, and fell in love
with Malaysia. Thanks for putting up the site. This is an
excellent example of web usage at its best. Sincerely, Tom Garcia

My husband and I were tourists in Sarawak, luckily we managed
to get on one of the few planes out of Kuching on monday (22/9).
Now we hear that the situation is even worse. Thanks for an
informative WWW page where we can get information on the
situation. Our thoughts are with our friends in Kuchin , and the
millions of people that have to live in the hazardous haze. They
are the real victims of the extreme human greed that has caused
this environmental disaster. With respect Inger Solheim and

as many students who study abroad like myself, we are deeply
concerned over the recent hazy weather surrounded the whole
southeast region, very unfortunately, our lovely Malaysia was
affected as well...thank for this great site to help us keep
informed . Today (24/9/97), I was being asked by a english woman,
"why not Malaysia launch a claim towards indonesia for
causing such hazardous situation", and i said "
Malaysia would rather help to clear the sky than just complaining
....."

Thank you for your HAZE page. We have people working in
Pekanbaru, Indonesia and it is wery difficult for them to obtain
any information locally, so I am sending faxes from Finland to
keep them updated about the unfortunately severe haze. I got a
lot of ood sources through your pages. If you could locate more
Indonesian haze-sites, it would be very helpful. Thank you!
