Japanese Encephalitis

Japanese Encephalitis - Cybermed Berita MMA

With the recent outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Peninsula, I searched the Internet for available information and have arranged these at http://www.vadscorner.com/je.html . On 19 January 1999 NST reported the death toll as 14 and mentions a new strain, the Ipoh JE strain. This strain is believed to have started in the 1990's. To help understand the virus, I have also made some links to a few articles pertaining to "new emerging viruses".

For ongoing outbreak information on JE (other than our local media), I suggest ProMED-mail electronic conference (http://www.promedmail.org/pls/promed/f?p=2400:1000) site and make a query for Japanese Encephalitis.

Prof. Lam Sai Kit (see Berita MMA Vol.28 No.7, July 1998 issue; cyber-interview; http://www.vadscorner.com/internet17.html) has been kind enough to give an overview of this disease and it is published in full in this issue of Berita MMA. The article is also available from the Internet at http://www.vadscorner.com/jelsk.html .

CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/) site has some relevent information under the following sites

This article -WHO TECHNICAL GUIDELINES ON JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS (Formulated at an Inter-Regional Meeting on Japanese Encephalitis held in New Delhi from 19 to 24 March 1979)(DOWN, Alternative)in pdf format(1,398KB ),which is accessible at University Malaya site ( http://dept.med.um.edu.my/jpenwho.pdf ) is made available due to the effort of Dr.Alan Teh (Berita MMA Vol.28 No.3, March 1998 issue; cyber-interview; http://www.vadscorner.com/internet13.html#cyber-interview ).

Another informative site is the article Japanese Encephalitis Vaccines by Theodore F. Tsai, MJ.D., M.P.H., Arbovirus Diseases Branch, CDC, Fort Collins, Colorado, NCID; Publication date: 01/01/1990 .(Alternative) (http://aepo-xdv-www.epo.cdc.gov/wonder/prevguid/p0000008/P0000008.asp).

This wonderful article Emerging and re-emerging viruses - An essay by Alison Jacobson, Department of Microbiology University of Cape Town is a must read article. It might be available in full in this issue of Berita MMA, if not, go to http://www.mcb.uct.ac.za//ebola/ebolasho.html .

From the latest issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/index.htm) a peer reviewed journal- Resurgent Vector-Borne Diseases as a Global Health Problem (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol4no3/gubler.htm ) is worth reading.

For MEDLINE abstracts (NLM PubMed) from the National Center For National Biotechnology Information(NCBI) , search for article on JE by typing Japanese Encephalitis .
