CONFERENCE OVERVIEW
JE was first reported to occur in Malaysia in 1951 when the virus was isolated and known as Kinrara-51. From 1950s to mid-90s, JE was reported to exist endemically in the rural population throughout the country. Small-scale sporadic outbreaks took place in 1974, 1988 and 1992. However, the last quarter of the 90s has seen a shift in the pattern of JE into an epidemic form. From October 1998 until end of January 1999, a total of 28 cases of suspected JE was reported mainly associated with swine workers and the neighboring residents. Out of these, 17 cases ended in fatality.
The need for rapid and accurate diagnosis of JE in the clinic could never be over-emphasized. As the conventional approach to treatment of suspected JE patients has been, all the while symptomatic, hence, early diagnosis is critical.
The goal of the conference is to provide a forum for discussion on the latest techniques in the diagnosis and strategy for control of JE based on experience in Asia. Specific goal of the conference is to explore the possibility of establishing collaboration on JE and other zoonotic diseases among the countries in this region.
At least five prominent international experts on JE will deliver their presentation based on their current work on JE. The Conference will be attended by reseachers, scientists, veterinary and medical professionals from government and private institutions.
